Franzen Chainsaw Sharpener – Keeping Us at the Cutting Edge…
At Walker’s Logs we pride ourselves on keeping our machines well-maintained and in good order, and keeping our saws sharp is no exception. With this in mind, Fred visited the Franzen family in Germany earlier in the year, who specialise in making fully automatic chainsaw sharpeners.
The machine is built to an incredibly high standard, capable of sharpening chains to very tight tolerances. It can also fully sharpen a chain and reduce the height of the depth gauge all in one pass. Our largest firewood processor has a 2 metre long Holtec chainsaw, which can cut logs up to 1.2 metres in diameter. We fit this machine with a freshly sharpened chain every morning, to ensure smooth cutting, and increase chain and bar service life. This machine is capable of cutting up to 50 tonnes of logs per day, so a sharp chain is essential.
We ordered the sharpener through the UK dealer – PSD Groundscare, and have already started to see the benefits of precision sharpened chains. On the advice of Franzen, we have also invested in a Rowasher parts cleaner which employs a method of using natural bioremediation to clean our chains and remove the sap, oil and resins which build up and stick to the chains.
