Winter is coming…

Winter is just around the corner, and with it comes a surge in orders for kiln dried logs in the Cotswolds. To continue offering our reliable delivery turnaround of 3–5 working days, we’ve expanded our fleet with a new truck dedicated to local deliveries.

We now have three delivery vehicles on the road, delivering single and double loads to our local customers. This increase in capacity allows us to complete more deliveries and keep waiting times to a minimum.

Even though we work hard to maintain quick delivery times, 3–5 working days can feel like a long wait when you run out of logs during the coldest months. That’s why we always recommend placing your order before your current supply runs low. Keeping a backup stock of kiln dried logs ensures you stay warm while your next delivery is on its way.

Imported Timber – Why shouldn’t we use it?

There are several important reasons why we advise against using imported logs and recommend choosing suppliers certified as Grown in Britain. These include:

  • You know exactly where your wood comes from

When purchasing British grown, certified logs, you can be confident they’ve been sourced from sustainably managed woodlands within the UK. Companies that are not accredited may not disclose their timber’s origin, leaving you unsure whether the wood is imported.

  • Imported timber can carry harmful pests and diseases

Wood sourced from overseas may harbour dangerous pests or diseases such as Chalara (ash dieback) or Oak Processionary Moth (OPM). These can spread rapidly once introduced to UK woodlands. Buying Grown in Britain logs helps reduce this risk.

  • Lower environmental impact

Imported firewood requires long distance travel, which increases fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Locally sourced timber is far more sustainable.

At Walker’s Logs, all of our timber comes from sustainably managed UK woodlands. Every log we sell is cut, kiln dried, and packaged at our Cotswolds yard, guaranteeing that our products are truly British and never imported.

What is Oak Processionary Moth?

Thaumetopoea processionea, commonly known as Oak Processionary Moth (OPM), is a harmful pest affecting oak trees, wildlife, and humans. These caterpillars are long, grey bodied, and covered in white hairs. They are typically seen in mid spring to early summer, often moving and feeding in groups. Large numbers can strip oak trees, leaving them weakened and vulnerable to further pests and diseases.

OPM pose risks to humans and animals as well. Their hairs contain a toxin called thaumetopoein, which is released when the caterpillars feel threatened. These hairs can become airborne and attach to clothing, grass, pets, and other surfaces.

Potential health effects include:

  • Skin irritation or rash
  • Sore throat or cough
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Allergic reactions in severe cases

If you suspect contact, wash clothing, skin, and any affected items thoroughly. Seek medical advice if you experience breathing issues or symptoms of an allergic reaction.

OPM are believed to have entered the UK through imported oak trees carrying eggs. Government-led programmes are now in place to limit their spread and treat infected trees, along with stricter regulations on oak imports.
